Japanese sake is a brewed alcohol made mainly by fermented rice and water. Japanese Sake is now popular throughout the world. One of the representatives is “Dassai”, made in Yamaguchi prefecture, and is served and received a favorable reception in Michelin-starred restaurant in France. This shows how Japanese sake attracts the gourmets as other fine quality wines. “Dassai” is also famous as the sake chosen as one of a gift to the former USA President Barak Obama from the Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.
Japanese sake is locally brewed in many areas, especially around rich rice-producing areas. However there are more than 10 sake breweries in Tokyo, concentrated in suburban area. Some breweries accept visit tours, and you can learn the production process or even taste the fresh sake produced there.
Tasting and comparing several types of sake is one way to enjoy sake. At Tokyo Shoten in "Ryogoku EDO NOREN", a nostalgic shopping and restaurants complex opened in 2016, you can try Tokyo local sakes in 300yen for each cup poured from a bottle lined inside the automats. This casual style is getting popular as a good way to enjoy sake tasting with some snacks or light meal to go with. Once you know Japanese sake, you will be able to enjoy Japanese cuisine even more. How about giving it a try?
